Fiona Foley’s Native Blood series is one of several biographical series of the period in which Foley has photographed herself in the style of colonial/anthropological portraiture in order to interrogate, reconfigure and reroute the historical representation of her ancestors. In this way the work explores the historical conditions (and systems) under which cultural identity has been produced. The direct, active gaze of the artist is a powerful visual tool for the reclamation of Aboriginality and self-representation.
