Yuria Okamura is a Melbourne-based artist whose practice encompasses drawing, painting, and installation.
The Blue Garden showcases Okamura’s drawing practice through a selection of works on paper and a delicate wall drawing, in which she merges botanical and geometric forms to explore the similarities between patterns found in nature and the symbols used in religious and mystical traditions.
About the artist
Yuria Okamura (b. 1987 Tokyo, Japan) holds an MFA (Research) from the University of Melbourne and a BFA (Honours) from RMIT University. She has recently been a finalist in the Paul Guest Drawing Prize, Jacaranda Art Prize, Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize, and the Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize. She has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and was featured in Melbourne Now at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2023.
Okamura has participated in local and international residencies including the Sanskriti Kendra Residency, India; The Studios at MASS MoCA, United States; Abbotsford Convent Studio Residency, Melbourne; and the Takt Artist Residency, Germany. Her work has been included in international art magazines including Fukt (Germany) and Create Magazine (United States).
