Museum opening hours & admission

Shepparton Art Museum is open 6 days a week from 10am - 4pm, closed on Tuesdays. Entry to SAM is free, however certain exhibitions may be ticketed on occasion. View our Current Exhibitions to find out what's on.

The Elsewhere at SAM café, located on Level 1 of our building,  is open 6 days a week for breakfast, lunch and coffee from 8am -  3.30pm, closed on Tuesdays.

From Melbourne

Take the Tullamarine Freeway and Western Ring Road out to Melbourne. Turn onto the Hume Freeway, followed by the Goulburn Valley Highway through Seymour and bypass Nagambie into Shepparton.

Time: 188 km - 2 hours

From Sydney

Take the South Western Freeway out of Sydney down to the Hume Hwy. Travel the Hume Hwy through Wodonga into Benalla. Turn onto the Midland Hwy and follow to Shepparton.

Time: 735km - 9 hours

Shepparton Art Museum is located approximately two hours north-east of Melbourne. You can now use your Myki card or Tap and Go options for journeys to and from Melbourne and Shepparton.

To travel here by V/Line, you can either purchase a ticket or tap your Myki/bank card.  V/Line trains and buses run numerous times a day from Southern Cross Train Station in Melbourne to Shepparton. For travel information and up-to-date timetables, visit the V/line website or phone 1800 800 007.

Buses and taxis operate a regular service throughout Greater Shepparton. Local bus timetables are available from the Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre, while taxis can be booked by calling (03) 5822 2214.

All-day, free parking can be found at our onsite carpark on Fitzjohn Street, and in timed parking in the driving loop on the south side of the building. Cars can also be parked Wyndham Street.

Disabled parking is available in the driving loop on the south side of the building, outside of the Visitor Centre. Disabled parking is also available within our Fitzjohn Street carpark.

Our building is access-friendly, and our friendly staff are available to ensure your visit to SAM is enjoyable and comfortable. 

Wheelchair access & physical needs

For visitors with physical needs, or who use a wheelchair, our main entrance on Wyndham Street is equipped with an automatic door at street level. Each level is accessible via lift, and All Abilities toilets can be found on Levels 1 and 4 of our building. A wheelchair is available for hire at our Ground Level - we recommend you call us ahead of time on (03) 4804 0000 to secure it ahead of your visit.

Changing Places

A Changing Places bathroom is located outside of the SAM building on the west side of the precinct. It can be accessed by following the footpath from the main carpark past Kaiela Arts and the Amphitheatre. Changing Places are fully accessible toilets with full-sized change table, hoist system and basin, designed for the exclusive use of people with disability, their families and carers.

Users are asked to bring their Master Locksmith Access Key (MLAK) to open. For health and safety reasons, slings are not provided and visitors are asked to bring their own which should be compatible with the loop system. The facility is available to use 24/7.

For parents

Nappy changing facilities can be found in the All Abilities bathrooms on Level 1 and Level 4, as well as in the external toilet facilities next to the outdoor amphitheatre. SAM is a breastfeeding-friendly facility, and every level of the building can be accessed via lift for families with prams. Prams are welcome within our gallery spaces. Please enquire at our front desk for access to our cloakroom facility.

Quiet Room

Our Quiet Room, located on our Ground Level, is a space available to anyone who needs a calm and private space during their visit to SAM. Our quiet room can be used for:

• Feeding and nursing your baby
• Prayer
• Visitors with sensory needs seeking a quiet space

The room is furnished with a chair, a small table, and a selection of children’s books.

To access the room, please collect a swipe card from the staff at the Museum Shop. 

Please note: The quiet room is a small space that permits one user and carer/s at a time. It is prioritised for parents, visitors with sensory or access needs, or for private worship.

No smoking or vaping is permitted.

Our Conditions of Entry aim to ensure our visitors enjoy a safe and beneficial experience at SAM whilst safeguarding our staff and our collections and exhibitions.

By entering SAM premises, each person agrees to be bound by the following:

BEHAVIOUR & DIRECTIONS FROM STAFF

• Treat staff, volunteers, artists, contractors, and other visitors with respect & kindness.
• No eating or drinking in the museum. Water bottles are not permitted inside any SAM gallery space.
• No damaging, theft, defacing or removing any sign, structure, facility, resources, equipment, or natural feature at SAM & its surrounds.
• Adults must appropriately supervise children & minors while on site at SAM. Running inside SAM not permitted, ensuring prevention of injury and protection of both visitors and the artwork.
• No threats, violence, hate speech or offensive behaviour toward staff, volunteers, patrons, guests, visitors, or contractors.
• No signposting or affixing of placards, posters, or stickers at SAM.
• Please respect the rights of other visitors to quiet contemplation and study. No actions may be taken which cause disruption or disturbance of tours, public programs, educational opportunities, events, functions, or gatherings.
• No littering or creating undue mess.
• No playing or operation of speakers/sound producing devices (including devices that make, reproduce, or amplify sound) or musical instruments
• No soliciting or collecting money, distributing handbills, pamphlets, books or advertising placards or notices.
• Additional signed conditions for events, functions or other activations must be always adhered to – this may include age restrictions to view particular exhibitions.
• In the instance of an evacuation order, medical emergency or stay in place directive, staff, volunteers, visitors, or contractors must follow all the directions of the Chief Warden, Area Wardens, & relevant emergency service providers.
• Peaceful protesting in the external public spaces is permitted; however, it is not permitted inside the building & no hate speech, criminal activity, or disruption to other patrons or visitors, events or functions is permitted during any protests.

IN THE MUSEUM & GALLERIES

• No touching, or in any other way, interfering with artwork on display.
• All fresh flowers & plant material must be sprayed with Pyrethrum spray which is available from reception desk. This helps SAM to protect our collection from insects.
• Trained, registered & visibly identifiable guide, hearing and other assistance dogs are welcome to visit when accompanied by their handler and must wear the appropriate identification – e.g. support animal vests.
• Sketching and note-taking is welcome. However, the use of charcoal, pastels, permanent markers and watercolour or oil paint is not allowed in the galleries.
• No commercial activities or commercial functions without a valid permit or booking to operate within the precinct - this may require obtaining City of Greater Shepparton permits.

PHOTOGRAPHY & FILMING

Visitors may take photos in the gallery unless it is stated otherwise. Photography must be for personal, non-commercial use only. Please note the following: 

• The use of flash, lighting, tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks is not permitted 

• It is your responsibility to ensure copyright and other laws are not infringed 

• Filming requires prior permission – please chat with SAM Staff if you intend to vlog or record your experience in our gallery. 

• Photography or filming of children and young people under 18 is prohibited without consent of the accompanying adult. 

Please respect the wishes of all visitors by not obstructing the view of the artworks or taking pictures/recording of anyone without their consent. 

Representatives from media outlets intending to photograph or film in the museum must identify themselves to staff and notify the SAM Communications Coordinator.

BAG POLICY & CLOAKING

• Backpacks, umbrellas, large bags /luggage and professional photography equipment are not permitted within the museum spaces and must be cloaked upon entry. Cloaking services are available at the Ticket Desk on the Ground Floor of the SAM building.

• SAM reserves the right to inspect any bag, luggage, or object, however described, upon entry to and before leaving SAM premises.

• Scooters of any form, bicycles, skateboards, children’s bicycles/tricycles or any other wheeled transport not being used as a mobility aid are not permitted inside the museum and must either be left outside the museum or with staff on SAM’s Ground Level. SAM does not accept responsibility for these items, and prevention of theft, loss or damage remains the sole responsibility of the owners of the items.

SMOKING, VAPING, ALCOHOL & DRUGS

• No smoking or vaping within the SAM precinct – this includes within 10 metres of all entrances/exits, near public toilets, the children’s playground, and BBQ areas.
• No consumption of alcohol outside of licenced events and within designated areas
• No use of illicit substances at any time within the SAM precinct
