Gertrude Contemporary Art on the Road

Arts educators are invited to join SAM for Contemporary Art on the Road - a professional development program for educators hosted by Gertrude Contemporary featuring presentations from Monash University Museum of Art and VCAA, followed by a creative workshop led by artist Elyas Alavi.

Bringing artists, art educators and teachers together to exchange ideas, share creative experiences and explore contemporary art and culture, the program has been designed to introduce teachers to a range of hands-on strategies and resources for teaching contemporary art in their classroom.

About Elyas Alavi:

Expressed in poetry, painting, installation, performance and moving image, Elyas Alavi’s practice examines themes of identity and representation through the complex intersections of race, displacement, gender, and sexuality, and explores complex histories in the Greater Middle East region.

Alavi has exhibited nationally and internationally and has published three poetry books in Afghanistan and Iran. He graduated with a Master of Visual Arts from the University of South Australia in 2016 and a Master of Fine Arts at Chelsea College of Arts, University of London. He is the recipient of the 2019 Anne & Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship.
