SAM Clay School: Weekend Intensive

Keen to get creative with clay in 2024? Then join us on 16 & 17 March for a weekend of wheel-throwing in SAM Clay School, our popular pottery workshop led by local ceramicist Denielle Anderson (the master behind Honeypot Pottery).

Suitable for both absolute beginners and people with experience on the wheel, novices will enjoy guidance from Denielle on the fundamentals of the pottery wheel, while those with some experience are free to use the time to experiment and explore.

Day 1: Fundamentals of clay

On Day 1, attendees will learn the basics of operating the pottery wheel and techniques of wedging and throwing clay under Denielle’s expert lens. At the end of Day 1, attendees will have created between 3 and 8 functional pieces.

Day 2 : Trimming, design & decoration

On Day 2, attendees will explore techniques in trimming, design, and surface decoration, as well as have further opportunities to throw on the wheel. Denielle will guide attendees through decorating with porcelain slip, stamping and carving techniques, as well as adding handles, sculptural pieces, etc.

Note: “Trimming” is a step that relies on your thrown pieces being a suitable level of dry. If pieces aren’t dry enough to be trimmed, that’s ok! Denielle will finalise the trimming of everyone’s pieces when ready.

Lunch from Elsewhere at SAM is included in the ticket price, with gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options available.

All materials provided. Price inclusive of 2 kiln fires.

Places in this workshop are limited - book your place now to start your ceramics journey!
