SAM Deep Dives: The Modern Woman – Visibility in Art with Dr Mimi Kelly – Lecture series

From the studio to the street, explore how early modernism transformed opportunities for women in this fascinating in-person lecture presented by Dr Mimi Kelly.

As part of our SAM Deep Dives series, this talk examines the significant rise of women artists and the expanding representation of women in art during the modern era. With industrialisation came new economic and educational opportunities, while the rise of the New Woman and women’s rights movements challenged traditional ideas of women’s roles in society.

Through artists, artworks, and movements such as Surrealism and Expressionism, discover how modern women helped reshape the art world—laying foundations for greater visibility, creative innovation, and gender equity.

The seminar will conclude with an informal Q&A and discussion. All are welcome to join – pre-reading of the Salon like it’s 1905 toolkit (to be provided) is encouraged but not required.
