SAM Deep Dives: Tracing the face — A history of portraiture with Professor Lisa Slade

Join Professor Lisa Slade for a special evening lecture exploring the history and enduring power of portraiture.

Beginning with Pliny the Elder’s story of a young woman tracing her lover’s shadow before their separation, Lisa will examine how portraiture has long been entwined with memory, emotion and identity.

Grounded in Australia’s most famous portrait exhibition, the Archibald Prize, the talk will trace the representation of the face from its emotive origins to contemporary cultural debates.
