SAM Spotlight

Applications now open!

A highlight of the SAM’s annual exhibition program is SAM Spotlight, a dedicated solo exhibition opportunity. The successful applicant works with SAM curators in a professional and supportive environment to design and present a show of their recent work, which will be on display in the Community Gallery at SAM for a period of 12 weeks. The awarded artist will receive an artist fee of $1,000.00 along with financial support for the production of new work and the exhibition.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Please complete the online application form on the SAM website, which involves:

  • Applicant’s contact details;
  • Short artist bio (max 300 words);
  • Artist CV, no more than 2 pages (uploaded as a .pdf, no larger than 1 MB);
  • Artist portfolio as a five-page .pdf: this should include images of three to five artworks. Images should be labelled with a caption detailing artwork title, year, medium and dimensions. (uploaded as a .pdf, no larger than 5MB). For moving image, performance or sound artworks a ‘still’ must be included of the work in the portfolio and a link provided to viewable files on Vimeo, Youtube, or the applicant’s website;
  • A brief concept proposal for the exhibition (maximum 500 words);
  • Website, blog or online portfolio website links if available (provide up to 3 URLs and access passwords where relevant);
  • Proof of Public Liability Insurance (PLI) or intention to get PLI if successful;
  • Pay the non-refundable application fee of $33. The application fee contributes to the administration and handling of SAM SPOTLIGHT and includes a 1-year Friend of SAM Membership which will become active upon closure of the application period, at which point you will be emailed the details of your membership.

Applications close on 6 February 2023. In March 2023 the Selection Panel will assess all applications.

Applicants will be charged $33 non-refundable application fee that covers administrative costs.

SAM Ltd reserves the right to change exhibition dates.

SELECTION CRITERIA

SAM SPOTLIGHT applications will be assessed according to the following selection criteria:

  • The exhibition is suitable for the physical exhibition space;
  • The artist can demonstrate a prior exhibition record, and/or can demonstrate a commitment to a professional career with their creative practice;
  • The artistic merit of the artworks and concept for the exhibition are original, clear and well thought out;
  • The opportunity of the exhibition will benefit the artist’s professional development
  • The artist and/or the proposed exhibition can demonstrate a strong connection to the Goulburn Valley and Hume Region.

SELECTION PROCESS

Once the application period has closed, SAM will convene the Selection Panel to review and assess all SAM SPOTLIGHT applications received. The Selection Panel is made up of members of the SAM Exhibitions and Engagement teams, along with external local artistic and community group representatives.

OFFER OF EXHIBITION AND ACCEPTANCE

The Selection Panel will select one artist for the SAM SPOTLIGHT 2023 exhibition and notify the successful applicant in writing in March 2023.

Acceptance of the offer to exhibit at SAM must be made in writing and with a signed artist agreement within two weeks of the dated offer. After this time, SAM will approach another applicant to exhibit or make alternative arrangements.

ARTIST FEE

After signing their artist agreement and completing SAM’s new supplier form, the successful applicant will be eligible to invoice for their artist fee of $1,000.00. SAM will also allocate funds for costs associated with the production of new work and the exhibition. The Curator for the Community Gallery and the artist will determine how these funds will be allocated together.
