Gosia Wlodarczak: Repetition
Gosia Wlodarczak: Repetition
From 28 June
Over ten consecutive days in June 2025, acclaimed artist Gosia Wlodarczak will transform the windows at SAM into a living, breathing drawing surface, the latest expansion of her Frost Drawings series.
Known for her durational, site-responsive performances, Wlodarczak uses the gallery’s expansive glass windows as a canvas, tracing and re-tracing the visible to draw the surrounding environment as she sees it. Working with white markers directly onto the glass, Wlodarczak’s intricate drawings are created in real time during the museum’s opening hours. Each mark responds to the environment: the shifting light, conversations with visitors, the ceramics inside the glass showcase, and impressions of the surrounding landscape. These delicate tracings accumulate over days, enveloping the windows in a dense, layered veil of lines that echo natural forms and carefully observed and visually registered patterns.
For Wlodarczak, drawing is a form of embodied thinking, visibly tracing time, movement, and presence. Her performances invite audiences to witness the work’s gradual evolution and participate in the act of observation, offering a rare opportunity to engage with the ephemeral nature of mark-making.
About the artist
Gosia Wlodarczak (b. 1959 Poland) is a Melbourne-based artist whose practice spans drawing, performance, installation, and site-responsive projects. Since migrating to Australia in 1996, Wlodarczak has developed an internationally recognised body of work that explores drawing as a performative, time-based act. Working across diverse surfaces—from paper and walls to windows and found objects—she treats drawing as a means of recording lived experience, mapping the invisible currents of time, memory, and presence.
Wlodarczak has exhibited widely in Australia and overseas, with projects presented at major institutions including the Melbourne Recital Centre and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Wlodarczak is represented by Gallerysmith, Melbourne.
