Artwork
SAM’s collection grows through the generous gift of artworks from donors around Australia making works of significant value accessible to visitors from near and far. SAM has a long history of generous community donations. In 2013 Carrillo and Ziyin Gantner pledged to donate their extensive Indigenous art collection to SAM over their lifetimes which is now valued at more than $3 million.
SAM is guided in its decision making regarding the acceptance of donated artworks by a Collections Policy, which addresses issues such as relevance to the existing collection, significance, condition and available storage space. As a result, SAM is unfortunately unable to accept all offers of artworks to join the collection.
Cultural gifts of artworks can also be made to SAM through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program which offers tax incentives to encourage people to donate cultural items to public art galleries, museums, libraries and archives in Australia. More information about the program is available here.
